Own Your Unapologetic Realness | Kara Burns | TEDxCherryCreekWomen
What if we loved ourselves so much that all fear melted away? Imagine a world where every single one of us has the courage to share the stories from our past – especially the ones of which we are ashamed -- the ones we don’t want anyone to know.
Kara Burns spent 18 years in addiction which led to federal incarceration in 2011. After her release from prison and after being clean and sober for over eight years, she relapsed in 2019. The relapse forced her to reevaluate her self-image and she realized that in order to embrace her authentic identity, she needed to release her achievement-based identity. She recognized freedom cannot come from replacing or dismissing our pasts, but by owning our stories, embracing and sharing them fully.
Kara is mission-driven to help women everywhere discover their limitless potential through self-love. Her courses and workshops give women all over the globe the tools they need to embrace their authentic identities. Kara Burns is passionate about sharing her story of success after nearly 20 years of substance abuse and incarceration. She was released from federal prison in 2013 and since then became a certified Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) coach and has studied at Metro State University. Kara has excelled in her career in the areas of events and catering management, corporate social responsibility, and national program development. She managed a social enterprise and has led 100’s of women on their journey in personal and professional development.
Through her soul-baring honesty, Kara has raised thousands of dollars to help women living in halfway houses, teaches career-readiness classes, and assists women towards economic independence. Having overcome substance abuse, relapse, and incarceration, she speaks nationally about the barrier’s women experience.
Today, she's dedicated to empowering women to see their value - inspiring them to seek and find unlimited potential within themselves. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
