L'Amérique a été la patrie de nombreux grands compositeurs de chansons tout au long de son histoire. Bien avant la naissance du jazz ou du rock & roll, les Américains ont créé un son typiquement américain. Ce recueil de chansons, interprété par Marilyn Horne (née en 1934), est largement tiré de l'ère pré-jazz. On y trouve les œuvres de Stephen Foster, le premier grand auteur-compositeur américain, ainsi que plusieurs Spirituals et les toutes premières chansons de Broadway.

Ces arrangements ont tendance à être simples, ce qui contribue à mettre en valeur la beauté simple des mélodies. "Jeanie with the light brown hair", par exemple, fait accompagner Mme Horne uniquement par la harpe. Sur la plus grande partie de l'album, l'orchestre de chambre et le piano offrent un solide soutien aux voix. Les cuivres sont utilisés en grande partie pour les fanfares et les intermèdes. Le chœur est rarement en tête, bien qu'il se produise de façon remarquable lorsqu'on lui en donne l'occasion.

Lorsqu'elle interprète les chants patriotiques, Mme Horne fait un travail remarquable en évitant de paraître banale ou exagérée. Quelle que soit votre opinion sur l'Amérique, il est évident que lorsqu'elles sont bien interprétées, ces chansons sont toujours émouvantes en tant que morceaux de musique.
