Pac-Man World Any% Speedrun in 29:25 (Current World Record)

Finally! After nearly 2 and a half years of running this game, sub-30 is a reality. This is a time I have been pushing hard for over the past year and a half, and I am extremely glad to have pulled it off, and by such a huge margin too! I'm sure this will be beaten someday, but for now I am more than satisfied.

For those who have never seen a speedrun of this game, here are answers to some commonly asked questions:

Q. Why are you shaking back and forth so much?
A. The back-and-forth movement is a technique called zigzagging. Pac-Man moves faster in diagonal directions, so by alternating these diagonals, you get the speed boost from moving diagonally while still travelling in a straight line. The faster you do this, the faster you go.

Q. Why are you collecting the PACMAN letters? Isn't that slower?
A. Collecting the PACMAN letters is a slight detour, but grabbing them allows me to access bonus rounds, which can be used to perform a major glitch (see next question).

Q. How did you just beat that level by dying?
A. When you exit level from a bonus round, the game still thinks you are in one. As a result, entering another level and performing an action that ends a bonus round will trick the game into thinking you have completed the bonus round for that level instead. Dying is the only way to complete a bonus round while not actually in one, so by doing so, I trick the game into thinking I have completed certain levels without actually doing so.

Q. Why are you skipping certain levels and not others?
A. In order to actually be able to fight Toc-Man, the final boss, I need to save all 6 of my friends, and in order to save them, I need to grab all 6 keys. This means that I cannot use the glitch described above to skip any level that has a key or a friend in it, otherwise I cannot beat the game.

Q. Well what if you found a way to get behind the doors in the hub early? Couldn't you just rush to the final boss and fight him right away?
A. The loading zones aren't actually behind the closed doors. Even if you get behind them, there is nothing there, so it is not possible to enter any level without beating the previous one.

Q. What are you playing on? Is this emulator?
A. I am playing on an NTSC-U SCPH-90001 PS2 with an official PS1 disc using FDS, or Fast Disc Speed, which is a PS2 feature that decreases loading times for PS1 games.

Q. Why are you using the American version? Why not the European or Japanese version?
A. Movement on the European or PAL version is much faster, but the big skips such as wall skip/gate skip are not possible. The Japanese version has a slightly slower set of moving platforms right at the end of Barrel Blast, which loses a couple seconds due to being forced to wait. As a result, I play on the American version.

Q. Where can I find the leaderboards for this game?
A. https://www.speedrun.com/pmw

Q. How do I go about learning this game?
A. You can find a bunch of resources + guides on the leaderboards linked above, and you can also join the community discord using the link posted on the Pac-Man series forum on speedrun.com.
