Ercoupe landing and take off, July 2019

Mike and I attended an Atlas Obscura event about the Ercoupe, a revolutionary passenger plane that was designed to be safe, easy to fly, and relatively inexpensive. The inventor wanted plane use and ownership to be as common as cars. For better or worse, that never happened, and Ercoupe production stopped in 1970. Now the plane is a collector's item.

The Ercoupe has its roots in College Park, Maryland, so the College Park Aviation Museum was a fitting venue for the event. The Museum is just a few miles away from the site of the original Ercoupe factory.

As part of the event, a real Ercoupe landed at the museum, where were could see it up close. Then it took off to return home.

Sadly, this was likely my last Atlas Obscura event, as they are now exclusively using Airbnb for booking tickets, and I refuse to create an account for that unethical company.

Filmed on July 13, 2019.
