Psalm 6 — Have Mercy on Me | Catholic Sung Scripture | Penitential Psalm

Psalm 6 — for the soul that is worn out.
Psalm 6 — for when the body and the spirit both ache.
Psalm 6 — because God hears weeping.

This is the first of the seven Penitential Psalms — the prayer of someone at the end of their strength. Not performing faith. Not holding it together. Just crying out. If that's where you are, you're in the right place.

You don't have to pray perfectly. You just have to show up.

The seven Penitential Psalms (6, 32, 51, 102, 130, 143) have been prayed together by the Church in seasons of sorrow, repentance, and grief since the 9th century. Psalm 6 is the opening cry. Start here or start with Psalm 51 — either way, you're praying something very old and very Catholic.
