The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - or The Headless Horseman - an old American tale for a Halloween night

In the years 1819 and 1820, the author Washington Irving released a series of stories as part of "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." Included with Rip Van WInkle, the longest and most popular tale was "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", often known simply as The Headless Horseman. Long thought to be a masterpiece of early American literature, it is also a perfect tale told before a winter's fire, on within a gathering of friends enjoying hot spiced cider on a gloomy All Hallows Eve.

This telling is an abridged version of the story - to tell it all would bring the length well over an hour. So make yourself a fine cup of tea, or something stronger, dim the lights and listen to the misadventures of Ichabod Crane, his woeful horse Gunpowder, and the dreadful mounted spirit who wanders the nighttime lanes of Sleepy Hollow
