Leon Russell and the Gap Band performance. Recorded at the historic The Church Studio in 1974, and is the only live performance of them together that was captured on video.
The performance celebrated the album, "Stop All That Jazz." The album was recorded in 1974 at Leon Russell's House Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Paradise Studios in Tia Juana, Oklahoma; Pete's Place in Nashville, Tennessee; and Shelter Records, known as The Church Studio, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Stop All That Jazz was Leon's sixth solo album.
Song List:
0:00 Delta Lady
5:08 Alcatraz
9:05 You Don’t Have To Go
15:50 Smashed
19:50 Streaker’s Ball
24:16 Magician’s Holiday
The Gap Band, a funky group of Tulsans, backed Leon on the Stop All That Jazz album. The band consisted of three brothers: Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson; and it was named after streets (Greenwood, Archer, and Pine) in the historic Greenwood neighborhood in the brothers' hometown of Tulsa. Through the Stop All That Jazz album, Leon introduced the world to The Gap Band. The Gap Band then released their debut album Magician's Holiday on Leon's Shelter Records label. Later Leon played piano on the group's 1977 The Gap Band release.
Lead guitar: Wayne Perkins.
Background singers: Ann Bell, Pam Thompson, Lena Lucky, Marcy Levy.
The album shows Russell's creativity, coming after his country music album Hank Wilson's Back Vol. I. There is a diverse array of songs on the album, some jazz as well as synthesizers and programmed drum machines. There are some standards written by others: Bob Dylan's "The Ballad Of Hollis Brown," Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter" and "Wild Horses" by The Rolling Stones. Willie Nelson helped with the album and sang on the song "Wabash Cannonball." The album was produced by Tom Cartwright, Leon Russell and Denny Cordell.
