Eritrea - Afewerki statement on border dispute
(1 Jun 1998) T/I: 11:13:41
Eritrea's President Isayas Afewerki has called for international mediation to resolve a border region dispute with Ethiopia. The latest violence was reportedly on Sunday (29/5) near the village of Alitena north of Addis Ababa. Ethiopia claims that Eritrea is illegally occupying a 400-sq.km. (160-sq.-mile) area called the Yigra triangle in
northwestern Ethiopia, as well as other north eastern areas. Eritrea says Italian colonial documents justify its presence there.
