Don't force your performance-- real game changer is RADIATION. #acting #actingtraining #actingtips

Michael Chekhov believed that true performance should not be forced but radiated. This principle is rooted in the idea that an actor’s work must flow from within, bypassing muscular tension and emotional strain.

Chekhov emphasized the importance of Radiation’s the ability to send out the characters’ thoughts, emotions, and the atmosphere surrounding them, allowing these elements to reach the audience organically.

The concept of radiation is intertwined with two other pillars of the Chekhov technique: Imagination and Concentration. These pillars guide the actor in creating a performance that is not bound by self-consciousness or physical limitations but is instead a product of deep, imaginative engagement and focused energy. Imagination: an actor must always think in images and in turn co-feel with images, while Concentration is the ability to focus without interruption.

George Shdanoff, continuing Chekhov’s legacy, taught that actors should never act emotions directly. Instead, they should allow the emotions to emerge naturally through the body, using the GROUNDS, which "ground" actors, getting them out of their head and into their bodies. By doing so, the actor’s performance radiates effortlessly, creating a powerful connection with the audience.
Thus, in the Chekhov-Shdanoff approach, acting is not about forcing a performance. It is about radiating the truth of the character from within, making the invisible visible, and letting the audience experience the story as if it were their own.
