Claude Debussy - Etudes (1915)
Composer: Achille-Claude Debussy (August 22, 1862 – March 25, 1918)
Pianist: Jean-Efflam Bavouzet
Book 1
00:00 I - Pour les "cinq doigts" - d'après Monsieur Czerny (For the five fingers)
03:07 II - Pour les tierces (For thirds)
06:47 III - Pour les quartes (For fourths)
11:42 IV - Pour les sixtes (For sixths)
15:32 V - Pour les octaves (For octaves)
18:26 VI - Pour les huit doigts (For the eight fingers)
Book 2
20:04 VII - Pour les degrés chromatiques (For chromatic degrees)
22:15 VIII - Pour les agréments (For ornaments)
27:19 IX - Pour les notes repétées (For repeated notes)
30:24 X - Pour les sonorités opposées (For opposing sonorities)
36:06 XI - Pour les arpèges composés (For composite arpeggios)
40:34 XII - Pour les accords (For chords)
One of his last works, Debussy presented his Etudes as "a warning to pianists not to take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable hands." Although he adheres to a rule of emphasizing one technique per étude, Debussy very much transcends the bland connotation of the form. Just to speak of the first piece, Debussy begins the set with a seemingly sarcastic nod to Czerny's études, but this is quickly interjected by rude staccatos, before eventually opening onto rich, bright pentatonic runs.
Bavouzet plays with great clarity of voice, and coherency of style, particularly in his ability to navigate the many sudden changes of articulation, dynamics, and tempo found in these études.
