I Am Living Northwest: Roger Fernandes
"“The earth is a living thing. You can feel its heartbeat, if you pay good enough attention.”
For Roger, art contains stories. He describes himself as both an artist and a storyteller from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe or S’Klallam Tribe. You can see his designs in the carved artwork made with master carver Toma Villa (Yakama Tribe) in this exhibit.
Behind the animal symbols are living traditions that invite us to reconnect with nature and consider more deeply what we can learn from it. Roger describes earth as a mother “that gives everything to you with love and in abundance.” Nature, then, is “just an expression of her existence and her love for us.”
He hopes to see others carry the stories of animals, people and our connections—stories he was taught by his elders—so that “wisdom goes on across generations.”
