Wyatt Earp's Mescal Spring - Location of the 1882 Shootout with Bill Brocius and the Cowboy Gang

In 1881, Wyatt Earp, his two lawman brothers, and John "Doc" Holiday, engaged in a shoot out with four outlaws of the Cowboy gang. When the smoke cleared, three of five Cowboys were dead, and the other two retreated.

Not long after the shootout at the OK Corral, Wyatt's brother, Morgan, was assassinated by an unknown gunman. The death of Wyatt's brother turned into the famous Vendetta Ride.

Seeking vengeance for his family's loss, Wyatt Earp and a band of fellow lawmen took to the trails of Southern Arizona bent on killing the Cowboys. While riding up a wash on the East side of the Whetstone Mountains, the Earp Posse engaged a group of Cowboys.

Whether it was an accident or an ambush led by Curly Bill Brocius, the gunfight ended Brocius' life, as well as another of his gang. While the OK Corral is still famous for the well known gun battle that took place there, the Mescal Spring shootout is definitely a memorable part of Old West history.

This video explores Mescal Spring and the wash where Wyatt Earp's posse and a handful of the Cowboy outlaws fought for the last time. The desert landscape was different as there was more moisture 140 years ago.
