2013 Volkswagen Golf GTD Test Drive & Car Video Review

The diesel engine provides tons of torque while the DSG transmission is nearly perfect. This European only car is based on the GTI Hatchback except that instead of a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine, there is a TDI engine under the hood. The VW GTD combines the sportiness found in the GTI with the miserly fuel economy found in the Golf TDI. In Europe the Volkswagen GTD has a base price right under $40k and this little diesel hatchback could make its way to the U.S. as a 2014 MK7 model.

Say you are in the market for an economical car but you want it to look sporty, get good gas mileage, and be fun to drive; but the Toyota Prius just won't do. The Volkswagen GTD might be right up your alley. This car is essentially a diesel version of the GTI. Unfortunately we do not get this car here in the U.S. But if enough people write to Volkswagen, there is a good chance this car might show up in 2014 as a MK7 model.

Volkswagen has already made a big commitment to the U.S. market with diesels. There are a few different models with TDI engine options including the: Golf, Jetta, Passat, Beetle, and Touareg. Thanks to some minor intake, exhaust, injector, and turbo modifications; the Volkswagen GTD makes 170 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. Just to put that into perspective: the GTI has 30 horsepower more but 51 lb-ft of torque less than the GTD. Although the GTI is a bit faster than the GTD, the latter is much more fuel efficient.

Since the GTD is not sold in American, we are testing a German Spec car. So the speedometer is in km/h and the radio stations do not work. But there is something fun and exciting about driving a vehicle you cannot get here. Behind the wheel the GTD looks just like the GTI with the flat bottom steering wheel, interior features, and DSG transmission. The diesel engine provides tons of torque and the driving dynamics are excellent. This car provides a lot of fun even though it's a diesel.
