Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was released in 2017 and hard-reset the series by ditching action excess and dragging Resident Evil back into pure terror. First-person view, a decaying Louisiana house, and the Baker family turned horror personal again, with tight ammo, gross body horror, and jump scares that actually worked. It launched Capcom’s RE Engine, revived survival horror credibility, and proved the series didn’t need explosions to be scary—just a locked door, a creepy voice behind you, and the sudden realization that Jack Baker does not respect personal space.

Resident Evil 5 dropped in 2009 and officially pushed Resident Evil into full action mode, trading claustrophobic horror for sunlit chaos and co-op gunfights. Set in Africa, it paired Chris Redfield with Sheva Alomar and focused on precision shooting, shared inventories, and punching boulders with absolute confidence. It sold insanely well, wrapped up major Umbrella story threads, and proved co-op could work—but also marked the moment fans realized the series had drifted from survival horror into blockbuster territory. Scary? Sometimes. Explosive? Constantly. Subtle? Not even a little.
