Ryan Hewitt is a Grammy-Award winning engineer, mixer and producer with a credit list spanning all popular genres of music including notable artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blink-182, Dixie Chicks, Third Eye Blind, Flogging Molly and Jamie Cullum.

After working in the music industry for over 20 years, Ryan shares his thoughts on UAD Powered Plug-ins: specifically, how he mixes with them, the way they have evolved his work, and redefined the sound of music for modern audiences.

Ryan first gives you an inside look at how he uses UAD plug-ins when mixing the folk rock song, “February Seven,” by The Avett Brothers. He starts by discussing dynamics, sustain, and controlling the frequencies of an acoustic bass while maintaining its natural character using the UAD SPL Transient Designer, UAD Teletronix LA-2A, and UAD Pultec Passive EQ Collection.

Everyone has dealt with an instrument that sticks out of the mix like a sore thumb. Ryan Hewitt demonstrates how he tamed a troublesome upright piano that was poorly recorded and just didn’t fit in the mix. Here, he reduces the harsh attack while increasing its sustain and then adding low end color with the UAD SPL Transient Designer, UAD Fairchild 670 and UAD Pultec Passive EQ.

Finally, Ryan Hewitt wraps up by introducing a dark, ethereal flavor to the song with the UAD EP-34 Tape Echo and UAD Brigade Chorus Pedal to lift the chorus of "February Seven" and add the character and epic chorus feel that the song needed.
