Carly Simon ~ You're So Vain 1972 Extended Meow Mix

I so remember hearing this on the radio in my grade school mornings and with the opening swaggering bass line the perfect way to wake up to a new day...Carly sings it with a ferocity that reminded me of Alanis Morrissette's Jagged Pill era.

Originally, the identity of the offender that Carly was singing about was to stay a mystery and people kept hounding her about the subject. Later on she claimed that it was about a composite of several men she knew back in da day, but more recently she has admitted the second verse is Warren Beatty, who had been rumored to be the object of her disaffection.

Carly then confirmed the song was not about James Taylor. There was no question about the man singing backgrounds here, its Mick Jagger who was dating Carly around this time. I thought they were made for each other, they even kind of resembled each other.

It was a fluke that Jagger ended up on the record. He called up Carly while she was working on "You're So Vain" in the studio, so she asked him if he wanted to sing backup and he agreed. The song was released on her 1972 LP "No Secrets" which is ironic as she dodged the questions about the mystery man's identity for years. "You're So Vain" spent three weeks at #1 beginning the week of January 6, 1973.

She wrote the song and producer Richard Perry (Pointer Sisters) had the song recorded with three times with different drummers to pick the best performance for the single. Carly describes the opening bass lick, "it sets the mood of a swaggering self indulgent man to come prancing into the room with his hat"

She auctioned off the secret in 2003 and the wining bidder of this contest? It was NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol who had to promise he would not tell anyone else. In the past few years she has confirmed that there are three names David (Geffen), Warren (Beatty) and a third man we may never know the name of, since she may have told Ebersol and is keeping the secret secret.

Oh, and Carly uses very interesting references like "gavotte" which meant to dance but was a good word to rhyme with the two prior lines of "yacht and apricot". Her eclectic choice of words has made her a star especially when she delivers them to you in her songs. It certainly paints a clear picture of a self involved individual.
