Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Kamakura, Japan

Tsurugaoka Hachimangū (鶴岡八幡宮) is the most important Shinto shrine in Kamakura, Japan. It was built in 1603 and was dedicated to the deity Hachiman, who was the kami of samurai and war.

It is easy to get to this shrine. From the train station, it is 1.8 kilometers via the Dankazura, a pedestrian path in the center of Wakamiya Oji Street. It takes only about 10-15 minutes to walk there.

It is open every day. Free admission. 200 yen for the shrine museum in the Hongu (Main Hall).

You’ll walk past two huge Torii (gates) as you approach Tsurugaoka Hachimangu.

At the bottom of the famous staircase sits the Maiden (舞殿), a pavilion for music and ceremonies.

The day we visited, we were able to see the Joma Shinji (除魔神事) a popular holy festival on January 5. This Samurai ceremony has been held for over 800 years.

After viewing the main shrine, we walked up the hill past the red Torii (gates) to the Maruyama Inari Shrine, the oldest building on the grounds.
