Project A119 3/6 - NASA Rejected Fermi’s 1950 Nuclear Crater Hypothesis (A119 Ep3)
In 1950, Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi published proof some craters aren’t from meteors—they’re from natural nuclear reactions. NASA buried this contradiction for 50 years. Why?
This is Episode 3 of PROJECT A119: Lunar Government Secrets, diving into the 70-year battle between peer-reviewed nuclear physics and global scientific consensus.
In 1950, Enrico Fermi—father of the nuclear chain reaction and Manhattan Project veteran—published a groundbreaking hypothesis in the *Journal of Geophysical Research*: high iridium levels in Canadian Shield craters (3x higher than confirmed meteor craters) matched the signature of natural nuclear chain reactions, not meteors or volcanoes.
Ten years later, NASA geologist Eugene Shoemaker’s Technical Report R-195 (1960) made meteor strikes the official global standard for crater analysis—until 1970, when nuclear physicist Ralph Juergens published a paper in the *same* Journal of Geophysical Research. Juergens used NASA’s Lunar Orbiter 5 data to prove the Moon’s Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains) has a depth-to-diameter ratio (1:12) impossible for the 1:5 ratio of confirmed terrestrial meteor craters.
For 50 years, NASA, ESA, and 90% of geologists (backed by Luis Alvarez’s 1980 dinosaur meteor hypothesis) rejected the natural nuclear impact theory—dismissing it as fringe, even though:
- Fermi’s 1950 paper was peer-reviewed and published in the same journal NASA cites for crater research
- The 1972 discovery of 16 natural nuclear reactors in Oklo, Gabon (which ran for 2 million years) proved the hypothesis is not hypothetical
- A 2007 *Nature* study confirmed 10% of Earth’s uranium deposits could trigger natural nuclear reactions if hit by a meteor
Worse: NASA’s $1.2B 2013 Asteroid Initiative and ESA’s 2019 *Asteroid Threats* report completely ignore the risk of a meteor striking a concentrated uranium deposit—exactly the scenario Fermi warned of in 1950.
This isn’t a conspiracy: it’s a case of the scientific consensus rejecting a CARICATURE of Fermi and Juergens’ hypothesis (confusing it with alien nuclear bomb theories) instead of engaging with their peer-reviewed data.
