Dovetail Log Cabin - Upper Carrying Beams for Roof

In this video we wanted to show how we placed the upper carrying beams on both walls. These beams will form the foundation for how the roof is built. They were heavy and a bit awkward to get on top of the cabin but using some mechanical advantage and ramps we got them up.

After getting them up, we secured them using lap joints that I bolted together using sections of threaded rod.

Once bolted together I used the jig (logdovetailjig.com) to notch the carrying beam so that it would sit nicely on top of the walls. This was a bit of a tedious process with a lot of measuring to be sure I was doing it in the right place.

After the beam was notched we had to move it in place and rotate it so that it would sit on the top of the wall. Once in place, I used a lag screw to add a bit of security to the beam.

Overall both carrying beams got in place after a full day of work.

My plan is to build a small knee wall on top of the carrying beams and then sit rafters on top of the knee wall that extend to the ridge beam on top of the cabin.
