Error 404: Democracy not found
On September 18, 2012, Georgian national TV channels broadcast several video footages of torture and rape in Gldani Prison in the capital Tbilisi.
After the footage, which described how the prisoner were beaten and raped with rubber truncheons and household brooms, masses of Georgian citizens joined the spontaneous rallies all over Georgia.
The news were met with strong response from Georgian students. The protests have drawn unprecedented number of students who protested the condition of penitentiary system and inhuman treatment of prisoners. They also underlined the failure of Georgian democracy and wished to change the whole system. Students declared that this scandal was not a particular case and emphasized that this was the fault of the system, which needed to change. The absence of major free, impartial media sources and freedom of expression was also a cause of the protests.
