Here it is! The dance project I have been working on to spread awareness about prescription drug abuse. The abuse of prescription opioids/painkillers has caused a serious global epidemic, as the addiction rate continues to rise. Opioids include drugs such as OxyContin and Vicodin that are often prescribed by doctors to treat moderate to severe pain. In the past 25 years, the amount of opioid pain relievers prescribed in the United States has increased drastically. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the number of prescriptions opioids (like hydrocodone and oxycodone products) have escalated from around 76 million in 1991 to nearly 207 million in 2013. Many people obtain a sense of dependence on these prescription opioids, so when their prescription runs out they are faced with serious withdrawals symptoms. In order to face these withdrawal symptoms, individuals often they turn to illegal and extremely potent opioids like heroin and morphine to ease the pain. An article published by the Boston Globe in February 2017 shared information from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in which their reports showed that opioids were confirmed as the cause of 1,465 deaths and suspected in 514 additional deaths in just Massachusetts alone in 2016.
This crisis has already taken hundreds of thousands of lives and is likely to kill hundreds of thousands more over the next decade if nothing is done.We need to change the dismissive stigma associated with addiction and work together to fight this epidemic that opioid prescribing continues to fuel. We need to improve the way our medical system manages pain, making sure that all other options are discussed with patients before prescribing painkillers. Together as a society, we need to continue to fight against Medicaid barriers for inpatient addiction treatment and to campaign against the laws that prevent health insurance companies to aid mental health coverage. I know a dance video is not going to change this global outbreak of addiction, but all I can hope is that it brings awareness and insight on the topic. One individual can not stop this opioid-related crisis that our world is facing, but if we all come together we can work to combat this deadly epidemic one step at a time.
A huge shoutout to the amazing Talia Carpinteri whose commitment to character and flawless technique made this whole thing possible. Even after hurting her knee mid-shoot, she sucked up the pain and kept dancing until we felt like we had all the perfect shots. Her quiet and calm demeanor, dedication, and positive attitude is admirable and something all dancers should strive for. Thank you, Talia, for pushing me as a choreographer, it was such a pleasure working with you. Also, want to thank the crazy talented Simon English whose spectacular film and editing skills pulled this whole video together and allowed my vision to become a reality. I could not have done it without you guys, thank you so much.
