Afflecks Palace

Afflecks (originally known as Affleck's Palace) is Manchester’s legendary four-storey "emporium of eclecticism" and the undisputed subcultural heart of the city.Located in the Northern Quarter, this labyrinthine indoor market has spent over four decades serving as a safe haven for independent traders, artists, and alternative style tribes.

It hosts over 60 independent businesses across four floors, including vintage fashion boutiques, vinyl record dealers, tattoo parlours, crystal shops, and retro video game stalls. The exterior wall on Tib Street features a famous series of mosaic artworks celebrating local Manchester icons like The Smiths, Factory Records, and Coronation Street

The most visible Green Man faces for regular visitors are carved directly out of the church's masonry. You can spot six medieval Green Men sculpted in stone. They are located high up at the junctions of the main nave pillars, precisely where the arches meet and begin to sweep upwards. Each mask is uniquely framed by architectural foliage typical of the late Gothic style

The carvings of griffins, monkeys, and other creatures on top of the choir stalls—specifically decorating the armrests and the finials (known as "poppyheads")—form part of the cathedral's famous late-medieval woodcarving collection. Crafted between 1505 and 1510 by the renowned Ripon school of carvers, these figures showcase the delightful, sometimes irreverent imagination of medieval craftworkers. Because non-religious themes were permitted on the choir furniture, the artisans drew from medieval fables, bestiaries (books of beasts), and satirical folklore.
