Common Nighthawk peent and boom display (sound only)
In this video you can hear a male Common Nighthawk displaying at night over a possible nest site. You can hear the regular peent noise he makes. The whooshing "booms" are made by the bird's wings when he goes into a dive and the pulls his wings forward at the bottom of the dive to pull up (listen near the 11 and 27 second marks). This video was taken in Concord, NH on July 16, 2020 by Rebecca Suomala, NH Audubon Biologist and leader of Project Nighthawk. The photo is by Bob Quinn of a male nighthawk during a dive.
