You're probably wondering how Italians figure out if a food in Italy is an aphrodisiac.

Well, being a country rich in architecture and history, and despite Unification taking place only about 160 years ago, there is usually a story or stories behind such foods.

That's why we try and determine if the reason for each food item being regarded as an aphrodisiac is based on fact or fiction.

So, do you want to know how Italians figure out if a food in Italy is an aphrodisiac? In this video, you'll get an insight into how some Italian foods are regarded as aphrodisiacs.

So, the first of the next crop of such foods loved by Italians recommences with:

#14. Figs:

This fruit can be eaten in many ways - fresh, dried or seasoned.

It’s the perfect treat for lovers as figs are soft, plump and sweet, plus they contain amino acids, which increases stamina.

#15. Garlic:

During Roman times, garlic was thought to have magical and healing properties, as well as having the ability to stir up passion.

It is full of allicin, an ingredient which reduces inflammation and provides antioxidant benefits that will, amongst other things, help increase blood flow.

#16. Grapes and Red Wine:

The first civilisation to cultivate grape vines were the ancient Romans, and as a consequence, both grapes and the subsequent wine became the symbol of Bacchus, the God of Fertility and Ecstasy.

And following an ancient Greek tradition, it was believed that by giving bunches of newly-picked grapes to couples getting married, the grape seeds would bless them with lots of children.

Red wine contains polyphenol antioxidants.

These polyphenols found in grapes and red wine, appear to improve blood vessels and arteries whilst reducing the ‘bad’ type of cholesterol.

And improved blood flow to your vital organs will help prepare you for any romantic liaisons.

#17. Honey:

Fermented honey with water made an alcoholic drink called mead which, in ancient times, newly married couples would drink until the first moon after the wedding, hence the term of 'honeymoon'.

However, honey also contains a lot of nutritional goodness including:

(1) boron, a chemical that regulates the body’s oestrogen and testosterone levels; and

(2) nitric oxide, which is released in the body when in an aroused state.

#18. Mint.

This is thought to have been the precursor to pesto, to accompany roasted meats, which is still the case today.

Consuming mint was thought to have cleansing qualities, hence the term of ‘mint condition’.

Garlands made from mint plants were called Corona Veneris, meaning the crown of Venus, hence the association to love.

#19. Oleander.

This is actually a poison, and is definitely NOT to be eaten!

However, it is an ingredient in perfume, and the plant is found all over Italy.
