Saturday Night at approximately 8:30 PM LAFD recieved a call for service near Figueroa St & Century Blvd in South Los Angeles. It came out as an expanded traffic collision. A fully involved mini van was engulfed in flames in the middle of traffic on Century Blvd. An irate man was standing near the burning vehicle swinging around a metal bat. A Good Samaritan had tried to help put out the fire with a fire extinguisher but the man was combative and did not allow him to spray it. The fire grew larger as the man kept people from helping and was beating the van with his large metal stick. The Los Angeles Fire Department arrived to chaotic scene as the man was yelling at them and swinging his bat towards them as they set up to get water on the flames. LAPD police officers showed up and were able to take the man into custody. A woman on scene who may have suffered some smoke inhalation initially was believed to possibly be involved somehow, but it seems she just happened to be walking by the scene and got too close. She refused to talk to police and it is unknown if she later received and medical attention.
According to an anonymous witness on scene the man started the fire intentionally and the burning van looks to be his vehicle.
