Public Health Careers in the Pharmaceutical Industry

A panel of speakers provide insight on the application of public health training in the pharmaceutical industry. The panel includes speakers with public health backgrounds currently working at pharmaceutical companies and clinical research organizations in the Philadelphia area.

Matthew Phillips, MPH, is a Senior Specialist in the Center for Observational and Real-World Evidence (CORE) at Merck. He holds an MPH in social and behavioral science and a BS in public health, both from Temple University. Prior to joining Merck, he was a Research Coordinator at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania for two years where he managed observational and interventional studies focused on the availability of healthy foods in communities. At Merck, he supports the operational aspects of observational/non-interventional research studies, including the planning and implementation of primary and secondary data collection studies, as well as multiple internal process improvement initiatives.

Alexandria Kachurak, MS, is a Study Manager in the Center for Observational and Real-World Evidence (CORE) at Merck, specifically supporting the Pharmacoepidemiology department. She holds an MS in epidemiology and a BS in public health, both from Temple University. Prior to her appointment at Merck, she was a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Obesity Research and Education for five years where she managed observational and experimental studies that focused on child eating behaviors led by Dr. Jennifer Fisher, Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. In her current position, she works directly with the scientists in coordinating all aspects of observational/non-interventional research studies which include the operational planning and implementation of primary and secondary data collection studies.

Claire Fox, MPH, is a Senior Specialist in the Center for Observational and Real-World Evidence (CORE) at Merck. She holds an MPH in epidemiology from New York University, a BS in neuroscience and a BS in psychology, both from Allegheny College. Prior to her appointment at Merck, she was a bench biologist at a start-up biopharmaceutical company, and an Environmental Health Epidemiologist at Philadelphia’s Department of Health where she worked on childhood lead exposure surveillance and programmatic interventions. At Merck, she supports a variety of non-interventional research studies spanning the areas of oncology, women’s health, antivirals and methodology development.
