South Africa is one of the largest markets for the Golf GTI on earth and we were eager to see for ourselves how the latest, eight generation hatchback would compare to its predecessors, and to the wider market.

The GTI remains the sales leader in its segment and of course Volkswagen would like to keep it that way. So what have they done, and what direction have they taken, to keep the GTI ahead of its rivals?

Well, they've certainly added more heft to the formula. The Golf 8 GTI is a good 165kg heavier than the model it replaces. While the 2.0-litre engine is largely the same, there's a modest power and torque increase, up to 180kW from 169kW.

But from what we've read and seen overseas, the interior is markedly more luxurious and we were expecting that to contribute to a significant increase in the price, but VW surprised us all with a price well below R700,000, with the South African price for the new GTI set at R669 300.
