A tour through Soweto, Johannesburg

In a battle against poverty tourism, Lebo Malepa, a man who has lived in Soweto all his life, runs tours through his neighbourhood on foot, on bikes and in tuk-tuks. He's also turned his family home into a hostel.

Our tuk-tuk burbles and bounces through the tight alleys and broad streets of Soweto, South Africa’s biggest and oldest township.

We visit the illustrious museum in Nelson Mandela's family home, but more enlightening are the moments we get when our tuk-tuk stops and we're able to be amongst the people who call Soweto home now.

In the 1930s - 10 years before the official start of Apartheid - the South African government began separating black Africans and moving them out and away from Johannesburg. So began the ‘townships’ and the genesis of Soweto.
