How to vote tactically in the Welsh elections
Do you want to vote tactically in Wales?
Do you want to vote to stop another party?
I hadn’t wanted to write a piece on tactical voting for two reasons:
1. It isn’t my job to tell you how to vote. The job of a journalist is to equip you with information in order for you to make an informed decision based on your own worldview, ethics, outlook, financial situation, identity etc.
2. It’s almost impossible to tactical vote with any degree of accuracy under this system. By that I mean in the traditional sense, as we are so used to under the First Past the Post system.
Under this system tactical voting is really hard but there are things you can do.
-- If in doubt, vote for the party you want --
Firstly, and I can’t stress this highly enough, if there is a party which fits with your values and speaks to your priorities, go out and vote for them.
If you want to vote for Party X, my overwhelming advice to you is to do just that.
--Vote big--
One tactic is just to vote for the largest party which is opposed to the one you want to stop. Because this system rewards bigger parties disproportionately, mathematically you are better off throwing your weight behind the bigger one.
Let me give you another example. If you are a Welsh Conservative voter but you hate Plaid’s stance on immigration and want to stop Plaid more than anything, then under the current polling you should vote for Reform, because they are forecast to be the biggest party other than Plaid.
On the flip side, if you wanted to stop Reform, then Plaid is mathematically the best option.
HOWEVER, this can lead to unintended consequences (full details in my news letter).
This is because things will vary from seat to seat. It could be that lots of people leaving the Greens to go to Plaid in one area, causes the Greens lose out on the 6th seat, which allows Reform to get it.
The key point is that you can’t be certain.
--Don't vote for a party with no chance of winning--
You can also stop another party by making sure you don't vote for a party with no chance of winning.
HOWEVER, just because a party can’t realistically win a seat doesn’t mean you shouldn’t vote for them. I am only talking about this in the context of stopping another party. I truly believe that in a democracy you should vote for who you want first and foremost.
Long story short, it is very hard to tactically vote in this system though it is technically possible.
