Biography of Omar Bongo: The Dictator Who Ruled Gabon for 42 Years

Omar Bongo, the man who ruled Gabon for 42 years. At the time of his death, Bongo was the longest-serving head of state in Africa and the longest-serving head of government in the world.

Omar Bongo was so successful at the art of holding on to power that by the end of his life there was no one left in his country with enough authority to pronounce him dead.

It took more than 24 hours for the death of the 73-year-old president of Gabon to be confirmed, during which time there were no less than three official denials from the West African nation.

Bongo was also one of the richest presidents in the world and reports showed that he had 33 luxury properties in the French cities of Paris and Nice.
