🔁 Layer 3 Redundancy | Gateway Redundancy | High Availability (HA) | FHRP

In enterprise networks, downtime is not an option.
If the default gateway fails, users lose connectivity — even if the rest of the network is healthy.
That’s where Layer 3 Redundancy comes into play.

🔷 What is Gateway Redundancy?
Gateway Redundancy ensures that if the primary router fails, a backup router immediately takes over — without impacting end users.
This is achieved using FHRP (First Hop Redundancy Protocol).

🧩 Common FHRP Protocols:

✅ HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol) – Cisco Proprietary
• One Active, One Standby
• Uses Virtual IP & MAC
• Seamless failover

✅ VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) – Open Standard
• Master & Backup
• Multi-vendor support
• Faster convergence

✅ GLBP (Gateway Load Balancing Protocol) – Cisco Proprietary
• Provides redundancy + load balancing
• Multiple active gateways
• Efficient traffic distribution

🔥 Why High Availability (HA) Matters?
✔ Prevents single point of failure
✔ Ensures business continuity
✔ Improves network reliability
✔ Reduces downtime
✔ Critical for enterprise & data center networks
