1-11-4 - The Kingdom Splits - The Complete Bible Overview

Lesson Objective: To introduce the events that led to the split of the nation of Israel into Israel (North) and Judah (South). Main Ideas: 1) The time of the Kings was one of the most celebrated times in Israel's history because of the wealth, power and military success that Israel experienced. 2) The temple that Solomon built was the greatest thing that had ever been constructed, but it put a heavy burden on the people of Israel. 3) Rehoboam, Solomon's son, increases the burden on the people and they revolt and the nation splits into northern Israel and Judah in the South.

The time of the Kings of Israel were some of the most glorious years in all of Israel’s history. There were definitely challenges, but this season is a special one in that it saw Israel increase in prosperity and blessing, as well as being a time where God’s faithfulness was clearly shown.

However, there was a rumbling amongst the people that would prove to be catastrophic to Israel, as we will see in Part 2.

After David’s incredible reign over Israel, the nation was strong and wealthy. God has instructed Solomon to build a temple to the Lord and it was one of the most glorious structures that the nation has ever and will ever know.

But there was a cost that nobody could foresee.

The burden on the people in building this great temple was great, and after Solomon died, the throne was passed briefly to his son Rehoboam. Rehoboam had the chance to ease the people’s burden, but instead he increased it, and thus a civil war erupted and tore the nation in two.

Amongst the servants that Solomon had in his palace was man named Jeroboam. Jeroboam became the leader of a revolt against Rehoboam and led 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel against Rehoboam, splitting the nation in two.

Even though God was part of this split, Jeroboam quickly led the people into idolatry in the North (the sin of Jeroboam) and the once great and unified nation was now fractured and divided.
