On Monday, the Union Cabinet approved the long-pending women's reservation bill, officially known as the Constitution (One Hundred and Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2008. This legislation, which garnered significant attention during the first day of the special Parliament session, aims to reserve one-third of all seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women.

Key points about the women's reservation bill include:

1. The primary objective of the women's reservation bill is to allocate 33 percent of seats in both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women.

2. According to the provisions of the bill, one-third of the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will also be set aside for women belonging to these groups. These reserved seats may be rotated among different constituencies within the state or union territory.

3. Despite being a significant step towards achieving gender equality and inclusive governance, the bill has been stuck in legislative limbo for an extended period. Although it was passed in the Rajya Sabha in 2010, it had not been presented in the Lower House of Parliament until now.

4. The bill stipulates that the reservation of seats for women will be in effect for 15 years from the commencement of the amendment act.

5. Prior to the Parliament session, leaders from various political backgrounds advocated for the women's quota. On Monday, NCP leader Supriya Sule defended the Congress's role in introducing the bill, highlighting that the first female prime minister and president were from the Congress, and the bill itself was proposed by the party. She also noted that the bill faced challenges in passing due to insufficient support. Additionally, NCP leader and BJP ally Praful Patel urged the government to pass the women's reservation bill during this Parliament session.
