City of Austin leadership hosted a news conference that provided an update on the explosives detonated in South Austin on Wednesday. APD said on Tuesday, just after 3 p.m., it responded to a call about a possible explosive device at a home in the 2400 block of Vintage Stave Road. After further investigation, APD and ATF determined that the only way to detonate the explosive material safely was on-site. As a precaution, residents in the vicinity were evacuated. Around 5:15 p.m., APD said on social media the detonation had taken place, and the scene was “now safe.” “The detonation has taken place, and the scene is now safe. There was major damage to the home that contained the explosive materials and minor damage to the house next door. One person has been detained while there was a second incident this month where a house has been damaged from an explosion. Last week, a home in North Austin was destroyed due to propane exposure. The city said in a press release stating that the incident and the explosion in Northwest Austin on Sunday are unrelated, and no current threat to the public exists.
