After releasing his self-titled mixtape and his debut album Die Lit, Carti has built a big fanbase. In April of 2020, Carti dropped @Meh which was his first release in 2 years. Since the release of the song, Carti has been teasing the release of Whole Lotta Red on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter. The delay of the album inspired an album of the same name from artist Mario Judah.

On Friday, December 11th, DJ Akademiks announced that Playboi Carti would be releasing Whole Lotta Red on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2020. After posting a photo with Kanye West and reading Akademiks’ statement, it is rumored that Kanye West will be the executive producer of the album.
