The "FACE" Progression Reharmonized with Diminished Chords (Sheet Music)
In this video, I break down the popular "FACE" progression (named after the notes of the first chord), comparing the classic circle of fifths version with a reharmonized, chromatic twist.
BARS 1-4: The standard circle of fifths progression.
BARS 5-8: The "Twisted" version, where specific chords are replaced by diminished 7th chords that share at least two notes with the original, creating a smooth, chromatic bassline.
NOTE ON CHORD NOTATION:
For the sake of visual clarity and better readability, I have used enharmonic equivalents for some of the notes inside the diminished chords. While strict academic notation often requires double-flats or rare spellings (like Cb), I have chosen the most intuitive spellings to keep the focus on the chromatic voice leading without cluttering the score.
For example: F°7 is scored with the notes F, Ab, B, D, instead of the formally correct F, Ab, Cb, Ebb.
NOTE ON HARMONIC ANALYSIS:
For some of the diminished chords, you will find two notations on the score. The main chord symbol indicates what is being played, while the analysis in parentheses (e.g., vii° 4/3) reveals the theoretical function. This shows how each chord can be viewed both as a chromatic substitution and as an interpretation of the original circle of fifths progression (e.g., using a diminished chord exactly where a standard circle-of-fifths chord would traditionally fall).
To be clear: an F°7 in this context can be viewed as a B°7/F, which corresponds to the harmonic position of a vii°7 chord, preserving the progression of the roots by fifths.
If you enjoyed this deep dive, make sure to subscribe for more harmonic analysis and let me know in the comments what you think of this chromatic approach!
