Portuguese Pitfalls: Three False Friends to Watch Out For
What other false friends do you know between Portuguese and the languages you speak?
Here are 3 words that are very similar in English and in Portuguese but mean totally different things. These words can easily lead to misunderstandings if interpreted based on their English look-alikes.
1. Pretender: It doesn’t mean “to pretend”. It means to “intend”.
2. Compromisso: It means "commitment", "appointment" or "engagement", and not a compromise as the English false friend. Can you imagine how much trouble mixing these up can lead to?
3. Pasta: While it might make you think of Italian cuisine, in Portuguese, “pasta” refers to a “folder” or a “paste”, depending on the context. What you will see on a Brazilian menu for Italian foods is “massa”.
