ARDC National Skills Forum: Navigating AI and Research Training
As generative AI becomes embedded in the academic journey, trainers face a critical new challenge: how should we be using AI to improve our training and research skills when working with digital infrastructure? Three invited speakers share expertise and experiences.
Hosted by the ARDC’s Skilled Workforce Development Team, the ARDC National Skills Forums are a monthly community event for trainers and research support professionals. We facilitate knowledge exchange across the trainer community, and showcase digital research skills development activities, resources and best practice across the sector. This was the final event in the series.
Presenters:
- Dr Minh Huynh - AI in Research Training Lead, Australian BioCommons and Sydney Informatics Hub, The University of Sydney
- Dr Brian Ballsun-Stanton - AI Lead and Solutions Architect, Faculty of Arts, Macquarie University
- Dr. Weisi Chen - eResearch Technology Specialist, University of Technology Sydney
Timestamps:
00:00 Introduction: Ellen Lyrtzis, ARDC
04:20 Dr. Minh Huynh
- Evidence-led training design for specialised, community-centric AI training curriculum
- Using national surveys and focus groups to map specific needs of molecular life science researchers
09:46 Dr Brian Ballsun-Stanton
- Choosing the right tools for the task: How do we distinguish between ‘ready-made’ AI systems and raw large language models?
- How to master the technical and ethical domains of AI so that trainers can innovate without compromising pedagogical integrity
14:14 Dr Weisi Chen
- Scaling institutional literacy: Sharing insight into the design and delivery of a campus-wide AI training program
- How the strategic approach at UTS has built an AI-ready curriculum supporting a diverse research community at scale
20:36 Q&A
52:18 Closing statement Kathryn Unsworth, ARDC
