Columbus Zoo Baby Elephant Trumpets 6 Days Old Rare 2009.04.02

Video shows the rare view of a 6 day old baby elephant, Beco. Very few videos exist of an elephant this young. The Asian elephant was born at 2: 35 on March 27, 2009. Elephant births are rare only a few occur in the US. They are endangered.

Mother and baby were on display April 2, to acclimate them to people. The birth took place in the yard. The keeper, who had been watching for weeks, just missed the occasion. The baby sometimes just seems to go to sleep and falls over. At other times he lays down. He moves his trunk around.

A naming contest will begin Saturday on the zoo website.

His mother, Phoebe, 21, is concerned and protective. Coco, 38, is his father and his bother is Bodhi (almost 5).

This baby already weighs around 300 lbs. and the mothers gestation period was around 2 years or 655 days.

He resides in the world's largest indoor pachyderm exhibit as shown in the video.

Very few males elephants are in captivity only around 19 elephants in 13 zoos.
