Bwebwenato in Jabwa (1 of 2)

The history and legend behind the Jõbwa Dance is fascinating and mysterious. Jõbwa, translated "stick dance" or "war dance," is perhaps the oldest dance of its type. It was first introduced and performed hundreds of centuries ago on the island of Ebeju in Ujae Atoll.
In 500 years, the Jõbwa has been performed outside of the Marshall Islands only six times. The Jõbwa was performed in Osaka, Japan in 1980, and in Townsville, Australia in 1988. More recently, the Jõbwa was invited to perform at the 15th Annual Pacific Islander Festival in Los Angeles, California in May 2004. The Jõbwa also performed in Honolulu, Hawaii. The dance was performed at the 9th South Pacific Festival of Art in Koror, Republic of Palau in July 2004. Notably, the Jõbwa was performed in Majuro in honor of a visit by the ROC President and his delegation in May 2005.
The Jõbwa can only be performed for and with the permission of the Iroij Laplap (High Chief) and in the presence of an Iroij (Chief).
