Training to lift the inch dumbbell.

I have long had a goal of lifting the famous Inch dumbbell. Eponymously named after its inventor, a Scarborough born travelling strongman called Thomas Inch. Inch would travel between towns with his challenge dumbbells, the largest of which weighed a fairly modest 78kg/172 lbs, but was made all the more difficult to raise from the ground due to it handle diameter of two and three eighth inches, and a handle length of only four inches. Couple the handle dimensions with the globe shapes in which the bells were cast, and it requires the lifter to have an elite level of hand and wrist strength in order to break the dumbbell off the ground, let alone deadlift it fully.

This video is a montage of my training to lift the Inch dumbbell replica, cast by Nathan Holle. I already owned a 126lb "baby inch" also cast by Nathan, and feel of got complacent having changed my set up in order to clean the 126lb bell.

The full inch is a different prospect, and although I could break it off the ground early on, I had re establish a better start position before things got moving.

Enjoy!
