Grounded Theory and Thematic Analysis

In today's episode I explain the qualitative methods of Grounded Theory and Thematic Analysis. I make reference to Grounded Theory's origins (Strauss and Glaser), Braun and Clarke's (2006) description of Thematic Analysis, and Henwood and Pigeon's (1992) criteria for assessing good qualitative research.

Below I elaborate on the deductive approach and manifest themes, two topics which viewers have been confused about:

1. The deductive approach can use prior research and theories. Using this approach a researcher deliberately integrates prior reading and learning into their work. They analyse the data from this framework to develop themes which are greatly informed by the work of other psychologists.

2. An example of a manifest theme would be somebody who said in an interview “I really felt incredibly uncomfortable on that day”. Discomfort would be a manifest theme in this situation because they explicitly told you they were feeling that way.
