Dr. Maika's Parent Message: Red Ribbon Week Reminders

The next time you visit your child’s school, you’ll likely see red ribbons and drug-free signage around the campus in honor of Red Ribbon Week. It’s the nation’s largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign. 

The Red Ribbon Campaign has partnered with the Lung Love Foundation to share the facts about the dangers of vaping. E-cigarettes contain highly-addictive nicotine along with other substances that can have long-lasting health consequences. You’ll recall that vaping also comes with severe discipline consequences, including placement in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program. That placement is dictated by House Bill 114 as a new state law. NEISD does not have any disciplinary discretion here.

Please continue to have those critical conversations with your children about the importance of utilizing our tipline or telling an adult if they see something concerning or out of the ordinary. If you see something, say something. The North East Tip Line (neisd.net/tipline) is a safe, easy, and anonymous way to report a wide variety of safety concerns – from bullying to suspicious activity, violent threats and drug abuse. You can also call the North East Police Department non-emergency line at the number on your screen (210-407-0925).

I also want to share a friendly reminder that early voting is currently underway across Bexar County. You have until November 3rd to cast your ballot early or you can do so on Election Day – which is Tuesday, November 7th. Remember, this is also a holiday for students.

There are 14 state constitutional amendments on the ballot called propositions, including one to raise the homestead exemption for homeowners and a different one to grant certain retired teachers a cost-of-living adjustment. You can visit the link on your screen (bexar.org/elections) to find a sample ballot, check to see if you are registered to vote or find a voting location near you.
