Scott Ainslie: Hard Times, Come Again No More (Stephen Foster)

In 1986, I very carefully arranged this tune to bring it closer to 20th (and now 21st century) hearts: rewriting one line and avoiding the 19th century barbershop harmony in the chorus. I have closed literally hundreds of concerts with this piece. And buried friends. And family. I did not perform this tune for nearly two years following the sudden death of my younger brother, George. But he would want me to sing it to comfort others and it is finding its way back into some sets and settings. The resonance of loss embodied in Foster's lyrics and melody is updated now and then for each of us. I hope it's a comfort to you, feel free to comment on it, and share it.
