I remember waking up on cool summer mornings at my father's cabin in Mexico, the rustling of the pine trees outside and the distant sounds of the loons. I was only about 9 or 10 years old, and every morning felt like the beginning of some adventure. The smell of pancakes and frying eggs. Coffee brewing. The lakes out there are so vast and so deep that you could stand out on the dock and if you looked out, the morning mist made it look like there was no horizon; the lake vanished into a haze and you were the very last thing in the whole world, just a little child standing on that dock. Later in the day it would get hotter and the mist cleared and the huge sun poured down across the whole forests, and I remember my cousin and how we used to catch frogs and sit in the shallows and throw pebbles at the schools of minnows. I can still hear the rhythms of that place in this album. I think I read somewhere that Bill Evans wrote this album in memory of loved ones who had died. These aren't sad songs. They're beautiful and they bring me back to that cabin in Mexico. They bring me back to the memories of this place that I loved. I think that's what Bill Evans intended: not to mourn or cry, but to draw upon the beautiful memories of lost things, to remind us that the things we have in life are not to be possessed or controlled but to be experienced in the purest sense of that word, and then... Well, sometimes these things have to go. Sometimes, our beautiful things can't stay.
