EightOSix Textile-Based Lithium-Ion Battery for the future of Smart Clothing

EightOSix Technology Limited is pioneering a revolutionary textile-based rechargeable lithium-ion battery, offering a flexible and durable power source. The battery is highly flexible, capable of bending and curving without damage, thanks to the replacement of traditional metal foils with conductive textile materials, such as copper and nickel composites. This innovation has garnered significant recognition, including a grand prize at the Geneva Convention of Inventors in Romania.

Flexible batteries, like the one developed by EightOSix, have gained prominence as a top 10 emerging technology according to the 2023 Economic Forum. This prominence is due to the increasing demand for wearable electronics, making the market ripe for innovation. The lightweight nature of the textile-based battery, around 50% lighter than traditional batteries, doesn't compromise power output.

While the technology has great potential, EightOSix is currently targeting the wearable electronics market, with no immediate plans for large-scale applications like electric vehicles (e.g., Tesla). The primary reasons for this are cost and the potential loss of flexibility in larger batteries.

The battery's structure consists of an anode layer, cathode layer, and a non-woven fabric separator in between, encapsulated with aluminum and plastic materials. These textile-based batteries open up possibilities for integrating power storage into everyday items like clothing, expanding beyond the conventional perception of batteries.

EightOSix has been working on this technology since 2019, with commercialization efforts starting in 2022. Although not yet in mass production, they are actively collaborating with various manufacturers and brands to develop applications that can showcase the technology to the public. Potential applications include air-conditioned clothing and energy storage for solar panels.

EightOSix's battery capacity varies depending on the application, with the prototype in question having a capacity of 80 to 100 milliampere-hours (mAh). For more power-intensive applications, multiple layers can be stacked to increase capacity. This scalable approach holds promise for a variety of applications beyond wearables.

In comparison to other flexible battery technologies, EightOSix is unique in its use of textile materials rather than traditional metal foils. Companies like Samsung and Panasonic have showcased flexible battery prototypes using metal foils and mechanical treatments to achieve flexibility, but these technologies still fall short of the bendability offered by EightOSix's textile-based battery.

In conclusion, EightOSix Technology Limited is at the forefront of textile-based lithium-ion battery innovation, offering flexible, lightweight, and bendable power solutions. While their current focus is on wearable electronics, the potential applications of this technology are vast and can revolutionize how we think about batteries in everyday items.
