Paradigms of research, they're like cooking styles - really!

If you're struggling to get your head around research paradigms, let me explain a few of the key ones through the medium of cooking styles. Really! Stay with me on this one, lol!

In this video, I’m breaking down the big, confusing world of research paradigms - positivism, post-positivism, interpretivism, critical realism, and pragmatism - using food as our guide. Because why not make it easier (and tastier) to understand? 🍕🥗🍜

Ever feel like everyone else got the memo about paradigms and you didn’t? Like they all had a secret meeting where they figured it out, and you’re still waiting for your invite? You are not alone. Paradigms are one of the things I get asked about the most by PhD students - and in this video, I’ll explain exactly what they are, why they matter, and how to figure out which one fits your research.

Think of positivism as following a recipe to the letter - measuring every gram and setting timers. Interpretivism? That’s me throwing in extra garlic without a recipe because my intuition says it needs it. And critical realism? You’re asking where the ingredients came from and why this recipe even exists. Trust me, this analogy works!

So, if you’re ready to stop feeling like paradigms are a foreign language and start feeling confident about your own worldview as a researcher, grab a snack and let’s do this.
