Last week, Boat Advice managing editor, Steve Lague, was invited to take the Aquanami Jet Angler kayak out for a test run before its Australian launch at the Sydney International Boat Show.
After spending just a couple of minutes on this unique kayak, which is powered by a 17.5hp four-stroke engine with water jet drive and has a top speed of 25knots (about 40km/h) it was hard to wipe the smile of his face.
The Aquanami Jet Angler has been designed specifically for fishing and comes standard with a big storage compartment down the middle to keep your catch and anything else you want, six mounting bases to hold rods and all the other accessories you need and a water tight compartment for all of your valuables.
You can fit a fish finder / GPS combo unit on the console that also houses the joystick used to drive the kayak as well as a kill switch and bilge pump switch.
The in-built 7.5-litre fuel tank gives it a range of around 160km which means you can access areas previously too far and too difficult to access.
And while it was easy to see just how effective the 3.6m x 0.96m kayak would be as a fishing vessel it was also a lot of fun to drive.
Skipping across the water at 20plus knots in a board that sits just a few millimetres above the water is simply exhilarating. It was also surprisingly stable, both at speed and idle, and being foam filled it is impossible to sink. The electric start means getting it going is as simple as pushing a button while the joystick control was easy to use and leaves you with one hand to hand on to the kayak.
The Jet Angler is sold exclusively by Double bay Marine Group Pty Ltd and costs $13,495 for the larger two-seater model. The single seat kayak is $1000 cheaper.
