High Court Bar Condemns Irresponsible Remarks by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Water Dispute

The High Court Bar Association, Karachi, expresses its strongest condemnation of the recent remarks made by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz. Her assertion that “this water belongs to Punjab” and her suggestion—“if we are building canals, why not build them?”—are deeply irresponsible and inflammatory. Such statements trivialize a complex inter-provincial matter and risk inflaming public sentiment at a time when reasoned dialogue and legal process must prevail.

Her defensive claim—“I have not stolen anyone’s water”—cannot substitute for measured leadership. Water is a national resource and disputes over its management deserve calm, transparent, and lawful resolution, not populist rhetoric. We call on the Chief Minister to refrain from divisive language, respect federal and provincial institutions, and allow the courts, relevant authorities, and technical experts to resolve the issue on the basis of law, evidence, and the national interest.
