IG Metall's Statement on Tesla Giga Berlin Union Situation

IG Metall, Germany's largest automotive union releases a statement welcoming the "starting shot for the works council election at Tesla" Giga Berlin.

IG Metall's release reads:

Even before the first Tesla rolled off the production line in Grünheide, seven employees of the new Gigafactory took the first step towards the works council election on Monday evening, November 22nd. You have invited to the election of an electoral board for November 29th. IG Metall welcomes the starting shot for the works council election at Tesla.

“A works council ensures that the interests of the workforce have a voice and weight. That corresponds to the democratic work culture in Germany, ”said Birgit Dietze, district manager of IG Metall in Berlin-Brandenburg-Saxony. "Innovation and flexibility as well as safety, occupational health and safety and a strong co-determination are not a contradiction, but the basis for economic success."

The prerequisite for effective participation in the company is that the works council sees itself as representing the interests of the entire workforce and also represents them. Since the Tesla workforce is still in the process of building up and so far only around one in six has been hired, it makes sense not to let election day take place right away. Those hired so far often have managerial and coordinating tasks. The electoral board to be elected on November 29th will decide on this question.

IG Metall welcomes the move towards co-determination. With this in mind, IG Metall wishes Tesla employees a successful first works council election and a strong works council.

"For our members, we are directly on site and can be contacted with any questions," assured District Manager Birgit Dietze.

I think Tesla Giga Berlin's workers would be unwise to unionize. Elon Musk will just take the stock options away from the Giga Berlin employees if they decide to go any further and form a union at the factory. Tesla seems to treat their employees very well and don’t understand why a workforce would want to unionize. Yes it is work, but many of the people on the floor are millionaires already if they have been there for a while.
